London[UK], September 13: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government has rejected proposals for a so-called "kill switch" to stop an attack by rogue artificial intelligence.
The UK "cannot simply turn AI off," the Cabinet Office said, signalling opposition to calls for the creation of a new "last-resort power" for the state to shut down an autonomous model in an emergency.
Peers have sought to make the case for a "kill switch" in parliament in recent weeks amid growing fears of the risks posed by the technology, including warnings from experts that it could wipe out humanity within the decade.
Earlier in September, Liberal Democrat Timothy Clement-Jones tabled an amendment to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill that would introduce a legal mechanism for the state to intervene if a model malfunctions. But in a statement on Friday, a government spokesperson said: "Britain cannot simply turn AI off and blocking access to models in the UK would not prevent them being developed or misused elsewhere.
