[US], October 23: President Donald Trump urged data center companies to pay host communities or individual residents a "dividend" for operating there, proposing direct financial benefits as a way to overcome opposition to the facilities powering the artificial intelligence boom.
In a Truth Social post, Trump argued that "Data Centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area, have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck." His message comes as concerns about electricity bills, water consumption, and sprawling developments make data centers an increasingly contentious issue ahead of November's midtermelections.
"MAKE DEALS, and get them built!!!" Trump wrote. The president did not specify how much companies should pay, who would qualify or whether payments would be recurring. His proposal left open whether benefits would go to local governments, households or both.
The suggestion reflects a central challenge for the industry: securing community acceptance while developers race to build expensive infrastructure that requires substantial electricity, land and, depending on cooling systems, water.
Public resistance to data center construction has grown, with multiple states considering moratoriums. Residents' concerns include the facilities' environmental footprint and whether households could face higher electricity costs as utilities accommodate large new customers.
Trump, a longtime supporter of data center development, also asserted that large new facilities must generate their own electricity and provide or sell surplus power to nearby communities or the grid. He argued that this approach could reduce electricity prices. The enforceability of that requirement remains unclear.
His prediction of lower bills comes amid continuing uncertainty over how the costs of expanding electricity supply and upgrading transmission infrastructure will be distributed. Some large technology companies have agreed to help finance grid improvements.
Data centers can also sometimes adjust electricity consumption to support grid stability. However, neither arrangement guarantees lower residential bills, and experts warn that rising demand could increase prices.
Industry executives signaled openness to the broader idea of sharing more economic benefits with host communities. Marc Boroditsky, chief revenue officer of AI infrastructure company Nebius, told CNBC at Nvidia's GTC Berlin conference that community investment could include more direct economic opportunities alongside existing tax contributions.
He pointed to "education, job development, overall economic development," as ways companies already return benefits locally. His comments suggested that a dividend could take several forms, rather than necessarily arriving as a cash payment to every resident.
For developers, however, community agreements are only one obstacle. Finding sites with sufficient electricity remains a major constraint as power networks face mounting applications from energy-intensive businesses.
The debate coincides with investor concerns about the growing expense of AI infrastructure. CNBC reported that data center stocks have faced pressure this week as developers increasingly turn to debt markets to finance expansion.
