Washington [US], October 7: US President Donald Trump said he had made a decision to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, but did not disclose specific details.
Speaking at the White House on October 6, President Trump said he wanted to know clearly about Ukraine's plan to use the US-made Tomahawk missiles before agreeing to transfer them because he did not want to escalate the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
"I want to find out what they're going to do with those missiles. Where are they going to put them? I guess I have to ask that question. I don't want to escalate that war," Trump said, according to Reuters.
Last month, US Vice President JD Vance revealed that the White House was considering supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles. The missiles have a range of 2,500 km and cost an estimated $1.3 million each. The Tomahawks can fly at low altitudes, perform evasive maneuvers, and can be reprogrammed mid-flight, according to The Kyiv Independent .
However, according to the Financial Times, some US officials expressed doubts about the Tomahawk missile's ability to change the battlefield situation.
Russia and Ukraine have not commented on the above information.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on October 5 that if the US provided Tomahawks to Ukraine for long-range strikes on Russia, relations between Moscow and Washington would be broken. The Russian leader also argued that Ukrainian forces would not be able to operate such a sophisticated system without the "direct participation of US military personnel".
According to Reuters citing informed sources, the US is unlikely to provide Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, because the current number of missiles has been allocated to the US Navy and other uses.
