Doha [Qatar], May 11: Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui expects a difficult challenge when the reigning champions begin their defence of the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January 2027.
The two-time champions Al Annabi were drawn alongside four-time winners Japan, Thailand and Indonesia in Group F during Saturday's official draw ceremony in Riyadh for the 24-team tournament, which will run from January 7 to February 5 next year.
Qatar famously defeated Japan in the final of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the UAE to secure their maiden continental title before successfully defending the trophy on home soil in 2024 with victory over Jordan in the final under the captaincy of Hasan Al Haydos.
Speaking after the draw, Lopetegui acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side. "We are optimistic but understand the quality of our opponents. We are in a very difficult group," the Spaniard said.
"Japan are among the favourites to win the tournament. Indonesia have improved significantly and Thailand are also a very strong side. It will be a competitive and balanced group, and now we have a lot of work ahead of us."
Born in Asteasu, Spain, Lopetegui enjoyed a successful playing career before moving into management. He previously coached the Spanish national team, guiding them through 16 matches unbeaten with 12 wins and four draws before taking charge of Qatar in May last year.
The AFC Asian Cup will serve as a key milestone for Lopetegui ahead of Qatar's preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Thailand coach Anthony Hudson welcomed the opportunity to face Asia's elite teams.
"It's an exciting group with some very big teams," Hudson said.
"For us, it's a great opportunity to play against top opponents and anything can happen. If you want to compete in the Asian Cup, these are the kind of matches you want. Our opening game against Qatar will be very important, while Indonesia are improving quickly and there is always a strong rivalry there."
Indonesia coach John Herdman also stressed the significance of the tournament for his players and supporters.
"The expectation for Indonesia is always to represent the country with pride because our fans are incredibly passionate," Herdman said.
"Every time the players wear the national jersey, they must give everything. This tournament gives us a chance to achieve something special for the supporters. Thailand are a strong side, but every match in this group will be massive."
