Addis Ababa [Ethiopia], June 14: Nearly 75,000 people have fled Sudan and crossed into Ethiopia seeking international protection since the conflict began about two years ago, the United Nations refugee agency has disclosed.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in its latest update on population movement from Sudan to Ethiopia, issued Wednesday, said Ethiopia is receiving thousands of forcibly displaced people at various entry points along the land border between Sudan and Ethiopia following the outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan in April 2023.
According to the UNHCR, among the total arrivals of 74,142 people, 44,156 are Sudanese nationals, 19,490 Ethiopian returnees, and 10,496 third-country nationals.
Amid the continued conflict in Sudan, some 6,355 refugees have crossed into Ethiopia since the start of 2025, it noted.
The UNHCR added that with the increasing number of refugees entering Ethiopia, mainly from its neighboring countries, the East African country is now the third-largest refugee-hosting country in Africa and home to over 1 million refugees and asylum seekers.
