Tunis (Tunisia), March 30: Tunisian President Kais Saied met with visiting European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi on Tuesday, the Tunisian presidency said in a statement.
During the meeting, Saied said he hopes to further develop the already satisfactory strategic partnership between Tunisia and the European Union (EU) and expand the partnership to new and promising sectors.
Saied also welcomed the EU's support to Tunisia, saying that the bloc "always stand alongside Tunisia ... supporting the national effort to deal with COVID-19 and manage its economic and social repercussions."
For his part, Varhelyi reiterated the EU's determination to continue supporting Tunisia in introducing its new national reforms.
"It is important, in order to do so, to protect all the principles of the rule of law and judicial independence," said the European official.
He reaffirmed the bloc's readiness to allocate more financial and logistical support to Tunisia, and stressed that the EU is satisfied with the current level of cooperation with the North African country, particularly in the fight against illegal immigration.
According to the presidency, the two sides also addressed regional and international issues of common interests and subsequent risks in regional security and stability.
