Tbilisi (Georgia), October 3: Georgia's former President Mikheil Saakashvili has been detained, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced Thursday.
"I want to inform the public that the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, is arrested. He has been transferred to a jail," Garibashvili said at a special briefing in Tbilisi.
He said the law enforcement agencies had prior information about Saakashvil's movement from Ukraine to Georgia.
Local media reported earlier on Thursday that Saakashvili released videos saying that he was already in Georgia ahead of the Oct. 2 municipal elections.
Saakashvili was charged with several criminal offences including the violent dispersal of anti-government mass protests by the Georgian government.
He left Georgia in 2013 to avoid prosecution.
